CoachesMeet The Family

Autumn Weiss

CrossFit has given me the opportunity to turn my passion for coaching and hobby of staying active and fit into a living. I pursued the sport of field hockey through high school and college and after graduating, I became the head coach for a state championship varsity field hockey program in Northern VA and led my team to the state semi-finals and championship game 2 out of 3 years as head coach. I had been searching for something to replace the competition and physical challenge that team sports provided. I fell in love with CrossFit in 2011 and believe this sport is not just about fitness or health, it is truly about community. Coaching allows me the opportunity to share in the journeys, PR’s, frustrations, tears, goals, fears and triumphs of each of our members. There is nowhere else I would rather be.

A little about me: I live in Great Bridge with my wife and three kids between the ages of 14 and 18. So yeah, it’s never a dull moment in myhouse. I grew up in East Texas, came to Norfolk in 1990 for the military and never left. I’ve been selling advertising since 1998 and currently am WVEC-TV’s National Sales Manager here in downtown Norfolk. I started CrossFit in October 2008 and started training at Crossfit 757 in July 2010.

I’ve always been somewhat of an athletic, outdoorsy, and active person. After high school, I joined the Navy and was what I thought was in great shape while there. Once I got out of the military, the activity level left and the pounds came in. Over the next 10-15 years, I tried going to Gold’s and YMCA gyms off and on and just never could maintain the drive to keep going. I would think to myself, “I should just join the military again. Then I would lose the weight. Maybe they’ll just let me go to bootcamp.” Yeah, right?! What I was missing was variety, intensity, and functional movement that the bootcamp provided. We didn’t have elliptical machines in the military; it was all body weight movements. Then one day a co-worker mentioned a website called CrossFit and said we should check it out. This “CrossFit” thing definitely looked interesting and it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. After three fundamental classes, I was on my CrossFit journey and never looked back. Thanks to CrossFit, I have gotten amazing results both physically and mentally. I started at 220lbs and got down to 195lbs in about 6 months by doing CrossFit and utilizing the Zone diet. Now I weigh just over 200lbs because of added muscle. Mentally, I’ve done things I never thought I could do and that has helped my self confidence tremendously. But the most valuable part of this journey has been the people and the community that CrossFit provides. Not going to the Workout of the Day (WOD) is like missing a family function. I’m obviously a huge supporter of CrossFit and training is my way of spreading the philosophy that changed my life. Seeing the joy in people that accomplish their first pull-up, deadlift their body weight, or when they tell me how CrossFit has helped them pick up their grandchild without pain for the first time is very rewarding.

My CrossFit story began in college when a friend introduced me to constantly varied, functional movements preformed at high intensity. I came to CrossFit 757 in August of 2010 to get better as an athlete and that is what I did. I loved the community, camaraderie and atmosphere of the gym. It clicked for me that this is how you get fit and train for anything, anytime. I wanted to share my experience with others and help others achieve their fitness goals. It brings me great joy to witness people do things they never thought possible. I am always seeking ways to learn and further my education so I can add to my “tool bag” and pass along my insights to others.

In 2010, I walked into Crossfit 757 burned out from the same old weight lifting routine, looking for a challenge. I was immediately hooked as I had been missing the intensity team sports provided throughout my childhood and college. Thanks to Crossfit, I am in the best shape of my life and have met some of the best friends I’ve ever had through this community. It is gratifying to be able to help people achieve their goals and better themselves through coaching. A little known fact…..my name is Earl.

I grew up playing sports (softball, swimming, martial arts and rugby) but didn’t get into working out in a gym setting and eating healthy until my sophomore year at the US Coast Guard Academy. I knew I needed to make a change when I didn’t pass the semiannual weigh ins, and it wasn’t even close. If I couldn’t lose the weight I couldn’t stay at the Academy, which was more than enough motivation for me. It wasn’t hard, we had a nice gym, all my friends were active, and we had a great conditioning program for the rugby team. That was when I came to the realization that I had the power to change my body though proper nutrition and exercise, and it felt great.

I continued to hit the gym after graduating in 2009 but I was somewhat in a rut, doing the same old routine and eventually plateauing. Luckily, in 2012 I discovered CrossFit. Two fellow Coasties who had their Level 1 took me under their wings and really encouraged my growth as a CrossFitter. After my first simple workout, tabata air squats, I was hooked. The competition combined with camaraderie of CrossFit drew me in.

It wasn’t long before I knew I wanted to coach and help spread my love of CrossFit to others. I went to the Level 1 Course in February 2013 and at the same time decided I wanted and needed to start training at an affiliate as opposed to by myself or in a small group, that’s what brought me to CrossFit 757.

My favorite part about coaching is helping and watching people change both physically and mentally. I love the moments when I get to witness an athlete doing a rope climb or a kipping pullup for the first time. It’s very fulfilling to know that I am contributing to someone’s success and positively impacting their health and fitness.

I am a huge fan of CrossFit. I believe it works and I enjoy teaching it to others. The CrossFit Community has afforded me numerous opportunities to improve not only my own fitness but also help others advance their physical capabilities. It was the sense of community CrossFit offers plus the overwhelming feeling of fulfillment received from helping others that lead me to open my own gym. Everyday I wake up with the ability encourage people to become healthier, stronger, and overcome physical limitations. I take this responsibility seriously and am honored every chance I have to positively impact the lives of others.

Since a young age, I always enjoyed just about anything that involved being active. Through high school I played lacrosse, soccer, and basketball as well as sailing and running competitively. Growing up in the Boston area, the mountains and ocean offered opportunities to get outdoors to surf, hike, climb, bike and ski. Finding a niche in lacrosse, I played for the University of California Santa Cruz Men’s lacrosse team for four years. During my junior year, I discovered CrossFit through my teammates. I quickly found that my normal workouts paled in comparison to how CrossFit prepared me to physically compete and perform to my potential, not to mention it was the most fun I’d had in a gym. I also noticed benefits beyond the lacrosse field; more energy, more drive, and a better attitude that I attributed to CrossFit’s emphasis on functional fitness and nutrition. Always eager to improve my knowledge of fitness and nutrition, I look forward to the opportunity to share my knowledge with others.

I was first introduced to Crossfit shortly after joining the US Navy in 2007. I quickly grew to love every aspect of the sport, and used it to keep up in the world of Search and Rescue. The greatest aspect was the incredible communal draw by the very sport itself. During my final deployment my small group of 3 guys with some equipment gradually became a group nearing 30 with nearly an entire Aircraft Carrier hangar bay at our disposal. Our induction to the group was to complete Fran while being cheered on by the veterans of the non-skid flooring. The teamwork and continued drive to excel are why I continue to love Crossfit everyday.

My husband came home from his first CrossFit workout and said ” You are going to hooked!”. He was right. I still remember that first W.O.D back in 2008 and been doing CrossFit ever since. It’s the most fun and innovative way to get fit, hands down. It has helped me to be strong and able to do all the things I really love to do. Hiking, surfing, snowboarding, and any sport I can find.

I have been a neuromuscular massage therapist for the last 14 years and have always enjoyed helping people achieve a better self . Coaching CrossFit seemed to be another great way to do that. Figuring out how the body moves and how to train people a in way that is safe, efficient and effective is what I love about coaching. To see someone succeed in a movement  for the first time is always exciting. I plan to keep doing CrossFit for a very long time and look forward to helping anyone who walks in the door to do the same.
